However, I do have to point out that this was years before the studio version of the song ever became a hit on AOR radio in 1990.Ĭliffs of Dover was a great example of Eric’s command of guitar tone, resonating a violin type sound. The beautiful part was no one else really knew who he was, except for us guitarists. This was another floppy record disc that came in a Guitar Player magazine, man I just got turned onto so many guitarists that way! I put the acetate record on the turn table and was simply blown away! Not only was the song great, but the guitar tone and techniques were amazing. I wish line6 would model it.I was originally turned on to Eric Johnson from this live version of Cliffs of Dover back in the mid-80’s. I have snapshots on mine set up for both. Also a bit of compression at the top of the chain helps make the notes bloom without having to use as much actual distortion, which can get buzzy. It sounds awful until you blast it with the tube driver, or fuzz face.

Normally nobody does this, but in the case of Eric's tone, it's exactly what you want. Specifically, the flubby bass you get on a plexi with the bass knob up high. I found this to be the best method of replicating Eric's tone. SO the amp is a woofy dark mess, and the TD is just a big mid boost to make everything sing.

Then on the tube driver, per Eric's actual settings, he has both the hi and lo eq pretty close to zero, so I goosed the output of that and used it's gain control to adjust the amount of distortion. In trying to replicate Eric's actual settings, I found that using the Plexi jumpered model, setting it mostly dark with almost no treble, and the blending in the bright channel ever so slightly, got me pretty close.

In yours, you set the amp bright and then let the tube driver add the lows. I was able to get similar results, although i prefer swapping the method of getting the dark tone. That "second" Gtr also "punch in" and do a few picked arpeggios here and there (I had to google the name we used back then) all over the verse it also pumps up alot in volym on a few occasion during the song. That second Gtr is very clean sounding and it play some picked arpeggios for a few seconds over the main riff then stops it has some effects going on probaby a Chorus and is very compressed. Or play an acoustic yourself i hate that sound i never really managed to find a technique to get rid of that noise. Hard to tell really as it can be his 335 aswell as it doesnt make those common "string noise" when you move your hand you almost always hear on recorded acoustic guitar. I gonna do a matched IR for Limelight when i got some time off as i got hold of the original "stems" (Gtr 1 and 2) of that songĪnd as you say the main riff is probably doubled or even tripple tracked then mixed down to one track.Īnd just before the vocal kicks in Alex use what i think is an acoustic guitar. Maybe i gonna make a matching IR of Erics sound from the record. I think you came pretty close to the recorded sound Thanks nice video and good playing i have to learn that song some day.

We have opened a discussion thread in the Pub section discussing this. We will include a very detailed password checklist. We want to highly recommend that members turn on and use TGP's two-factor authentication option. We highly recommend every member reading this change their passwords as a precaution. We have forced email revalidation for all members that have not signed on for a while. None of the accounts compromised were using two-factor authentication. Talking to one member as I am working through getting his account back in order, he informed me that his Apple password manager had been compromised and made available on the dark web. In today's world, that is false confidence you can no longer afford.Įvery account that I've restored so far to the original owner was using compromised passwords. It is heartbreaking to see that the lure of saving some money will still fool people into using those methods to save a few dollars. Unfortunately, we cannot control how members do deals. However, the best way to prevent this is for members to exercise proper password hygiene (which I'll detail below), turn on two-factor authentication, and - I implore every single person here - only use payment methods that have buyer protection. We've made security changes that I don't want to detail here to stop them. They have scammed members in the Emporiums by creating ads with stolen photos and requesting Paypal F&F or Venmo exclusively for payment. Some fraudsters have compromised TGP accounts have in the past few days.
